Agrobiotechnology Talk Series (5) Insects and Other Arthropods in Agriculture: Field Survey, Biotechnology, and Genomics

Description:

Understanding and utilizing biological interactions with plants are important to improve the yield of agricultural products. Conventional research in this field focused on the interactions between plants and microbes. While studying this aspect of interaction remains an important research area, the biological interactions of plants with insects are gaining attention in recent years. For instance, under global climate change, the abundance and distribution of both beneficial insects and agricultural pests are changing, which in turn impact agricultural products at different places differently.

This talk shares several laboratory studies carried out, including a field survey of insects in local farms, genetics studies in insects in light to make new biotechnological applications, and genomics studies in establishing new models in agriculture, to shed light on these neglected areas.

The target audience includes international scholars, researchers, agricultural industry as well as the general public.
